New York Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson is set to make his first official NFL start this weekend against the Carolina Panthers. Wilson had a promising preseason after some bumps in the road during training camp, and there are high expectations for the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Ahead of the season, Wilson took a trip back to Brigham Young, where he developed into an elite-level quarterback prospect under head coach Kalani Sitake. The BYU coach spoke glowingly about the Jets youngster as he tries to take the NFL by storm.

Via Ian O'Connor of the New York Post:

“He’s a learning machine,” said Sitake, who first noticed Wilson’s arm and athleticism when the quarterback was a fifth-grader at summer camp. “He got better every day since I’ve known him. Whether he has a good or bad game, he gets better and better, and that has never slowed down since the first day he stepped on campus.”

It's no surprise to see Wilson's college coach hyping him up, but Jets fans have to love to see this. Sitake had more to say about the expectations the quarterback has and his overall mindset:

“He doesn’t really care about looking good all the time,” Sitake said. “When we practiced here, he created pressure for himself even though there was none. He’d move to the side to throw [off-platform] a little bit. He knows things are not always going to be perfect in games.

“He wants to accomplish the goal that everybody wants. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting to achieve greatness and trying to find a way to win the Super Bowl. That’s his mindset. … When you ask about the expectations everyone has for him there as Jets fans and the New York media, those expectations aren’t close to what he expects of himself.”

The Jets are trying to bounce back from a horrendous 2-14 season under former head coach Adam Gase. Sam Darnold didn't work out as their last quarterback of the future, and ironically enough, that's the quarterback New York will be facing on Sunday.

With Zach Wilson and Robert Saleh now leading the charge, Jets fans have hope again. They haven't been to the playoffs since the 2010 season, so those fans are itching for competence. There's plenty of reason to be excited about Wilson at quarterback, and hopefully he won't go the way of Darnold. His BYU coach certainly doesn't think that will happen.
