The New York Jets, per ineptness rules, have no plans to play backup quarterback Christian Hackenberg this season. That might not seem like a big deal, but considering the investment the franchise made in him, this pretty much puts away any idea that he's a future star in the National Football League.

Todd Bowles said on Wednesday that there are no plans to play Hackenberg “right now.”

When asked why that happens to be, the head coach simply pointed to the depth chart that had Bryce Petty as the No. 2 all year.

“Because Bryce is our starter,” Bowles said at his press conference. “Bryce is the next man up. We have people at every position that want to play. We’re not jumping people over people just to play considering anything. Bryce is our starter.”

Christian Hackenberg was a second-round pick for the Jets in 2016. They basically gave him the NFL version of a redshirt last season. Despite New York being nowhere near the playoffs and Petty clearly not being the answer for the future, the franchise is still keeping Hackenberg away from the field.

Once an insanely hyped talent at Penn State, Hackenberg may very well end up never seeing a real chance at being a starter in the NFL. If he's that bad in practice that he's not even given a chance, that's insane.

Then again, Jets!
