We're xis weeks into the 2020 NFL season, and the New York Jets are the only winless team in the NFL. The Jets are coming off a deflating 24-0 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday to fall to 0-6, their worst start since 1996.

Other teams that have struggled this season like the Houston Texans and Atlanta Falcons have fired their head coaches, but if reports are to be believed, head coach Adam Gase’s job remains safe even as the team is in the midst of a trying season.

According to a report by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano, if the 42-year old mentor is to be fired, it will likely be later instead of sooner:

Someone involved in the shaky Adam Gase-Jets marriage says his job has not been considered a “week-to-week thing” internally. That might not matter, as change seems inevitable, but it could happen later than many expect.

One league exec pointed out that the Jets might even be better off letting Gase finish out the misery over 16 games, for a few reasons: This isn't a roster that will ignite a winning streak anyway, a mini-tank might aid quarterback positioning in the 2021 NFL draft (though players and coaches never go for that), and the only natural interim option would be defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, whose relationship with the current staff appears tenuous.

If Gase is to coach the Jets for the rest of the season, then addressing the team’s offense should be among his top priorities. Against the Dolphins, the team he used to coach, New York could not score and had no third-down conversions until the fourth quarter in the 24-0 loss. For the season, the Jets have punted 35 times, the highest in the league, and have been outscored by an average of 18.3 points in their six losses.

Gase and the Jets will continue to look for their first win of the season against the Buffalo Bills in their Week 7 game on Sunday.
