New York Jets star safety Jamal Adams has requested a trade after the two sides failed to make any progress on a potential contract extension.

Adams is sure to have a number of suitors. But buyer beware: Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported Adams is looking for a contract worth “well above” $20 million per year.

Fowler also noted the current safety market is “below $15M,” which could complicate matters in trade negotiations.

Adams' salary demands were already thought to provide some complications.

The All-Pro gave a list of teams to which he would like to be traded from the Jets earlier this week.

It comes as no surprise to see the Cowboys on the list, as Dallas pursued a deal for Adams with the Jets prior to last year's trade deadline.

However, Jon Machota of The Athletic opined the Cowboys might not be willing to give up draft capital to the Jets due to signability issues.

Indeed, if Adams is demanding well above the market rate in his bid to leave the Jets, it could be a big ask for any interested team.

The 24-year-old is unquestionably one of the best–if not the best–safety in football. Adams was a wrecking ball in 2019 for the Jets, finishing the year with 6.5 sacks while also racking up a pair of defensive touchdowns. He can play up in the box or provide help over the top in coverage. Adams is also a sure tackler.

But in football, perceived market value is a major determinant in deciding how players are paid. This partially explains why Jadeveon Clowney remains unsigned after the former No. 1 overall pick initially demanded $20 million AAV in free agency.

Adams is an elite talent with the Jets, and he could put any number of Super Bowl contenders over the top. But is he worth more than $20 million AAV? That is the question front offices around the league will have to answer.
