The New York Jets currently have quite a congested quarterback depth chart at the moment. They re-signed Josh McCown and added Teddy Bridgewater this offseason to join incumbents Christian Hackenberg, Bryce Petty, and Joel Stave. They are also widely tipped to draft a quarterback with their No. 3 pick in the upcoming draft, which will add another name to that lengthy list.

But in anticipation of that expected addition at the position, the Jets are getting set to make some potential subtractions in the form of Hackenberg and Petty, Yahoo Sports’ Jordan Schultz reports.

I'm told it's “unlikely” the Jets will retain Christian Hackenberg for a third season. There has also been speculation that the team will release Bryce Petty as well. Important to consider as Mike Maccagnan prepares to potentially take a QB in this draft.

Hackenberg was drafted in the second round by the Jets in 2016, while Petty was a fourth-round pick the previous year. Hackenberg possessed some impressive physical tools, which was why he still went in the second round despite an uneven college career that saw him struggle with accuracy.

The hope was that the Jets could develop Hackenberg into a more accurate passer in the pros. Obviously, though, that has not happened. He has yet to even play a single down in his first two years in the league.

Unsurprisingly, the Jets appear ready to cut bait with both Hackenberg and Petty, who have not panned out as planned. Hopefully for the Jets, GM Mike Maccagnan makes a much better decision in terms of the next quarterback he picks, presumably with the No. 3 pick in the draft.
