Just days before the NFL trade deadline, the Pittsburgh Steelers add to their already impressive defense, landing middle-linebacker Avery Williamson from the Jets as per Ian Rapoport.

The full trade details include the Steelers trading a future 5th round pick to the Jets in return for Williamson and a future 7th.

After losing Devin Bush for the season with a torn ACL, the Steelers make a proactive move and go after his replacement for the year. The rich get richer.

Williamson has been one of the few bright spots for the Jets this season, totaling 50 tackles this season (31 solo’s), which is good enough for second on the team, only behind Neville Hewitt (59).

Williamson’s contract expires at the end of this season, so this would merely be a rental for the Steelers, but a very good one at that.

Pittsburgh currently has the top ranked defense in the NFL according to ESPN. It would be difficult to get any better, but they found a way.

The Jets do the right thing – preparing for next season by adding some draft capital in return. It may only be a fifth-round pick, but for an expiring veteran linebacker, that is a decent enough return.

Without a win on the season and not one in sight, the Jets will likely be in contention for highly regarded quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Surrounding him with pieces through the draft is much better than paying an aging linebacker when you're nowhere near contention.

The Steelers are going for it all, and in a sense, so are the Jets. This was a good deal for both sides.
