The Cleveland Cavaliers are fresh off an ignominious season in which they became just the second team in NFL history to go through a 16-game schedule without scoring a single victory. That said, Browns offensive tackle Joe Thomas openly lauded the team’s decision to keep Hue Jackson as Cleveland’s head coach.

Thomas wrote an article for Sports Illustrated, expressing his full support for Jackson despite all the losing the Browns’ have had over the past two seasons.

“I’m glad that the Browns, a team I’ve proudly spent my entire pro career with, decided to retain Hue Jackson as head coach after two awful seasons in the standings. It wouldn’t be fair to judge Hue based on his record after just two seasons because few NFL teams have put themselves at such a disadvantage in order to save assets and focus on winning three or four years down the road.”

Under Hue Jackson, the Browns have gone 1-31 since the 52-year-old mentor took over the head coaching duties in Cleveland back in 2016.

After the Browns went 1-15 in Jackson’s first season on the job, the team somehow found a way to be even worse in the 2017 campaign in which Cleveland finished with a 0-16 slate, joining the also winless 2008 Detroit Lions in the pantheon of losers in NFL history.

The Browns, however, have reasons to be optimistic about their chances of making the playoffs next season. After all, the team has a big cap space and a couple of high picks in the upcoming 2018 NFL Draft, which were both noted by Joe Thomas himself.

“We have more than $100 million in cap space; we could sign three Kirk Cousins if we wanted to. We could legitimately add three Hall of Fame players in free agency if they're out there. We have an upcoming No. 1 pick who could transform the roster by himself. You throw an experienced quarterback in the mix and there’s nothing that says the Browns can't make the playoffs next year.”

For a team with a long history of fumbling several chances to redeem themselves, Thomas sure does hope that this time, Cleveland is finally doing it right.
