Former NBA player and four-time champion John Salley is known these days as a wellness and healthy living advocate. His personal website and social media accounts like Twitter and Instagram are filled with tips on how to live a healthy lifestyle.

Recently, Salley shared his thoughts on a more controversial topic by saying he believes that the use of medical marijuana can prolong the length of a professional athlete's career.

John Salley on athlete marijuana use

In an interview with TMZ, he had this to say:

“I am a proponent and I believe in the advocacy of medical marijuana. We see football players in Alabama getting busted. We see – we need to get it out. We need to move it and realize that is something that can help the human body.”

“It helps athletes. I didn’t start smoking until my last two months before I was a pro. And I believe if I would’ve smoked while I was playing, I probably still would be playing.”

Did Salley and the ‘Bad Boys' smoke?

Here's the rest of the clip where it can be seen that the reporter tried to bait the 52-year-old into admitting that his teammates from the Detroit Pistons “Bad Boys” smoked pot before they played games or not. Salley gave a very witty answer though:

Tests on pro athlete's for drug use including marijuana has been more stringent these days. When results show one is positive for having used it, fines and suspensions are given almost instantly.

Whether or not it will be legalized as a form or medication to extend a pro's career is anybody's guess at this point. One thing's certain though, John Salley is an advocate for the use of it and will not shy away from talking about it.
