Justin Fields was in his bag again in Week 2 of the NFL preseason. Even though the Chicago Bears got destroyed by a Buffalo Bills team that featured a whole lot of Nickelodeon MVP and former Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, the things Fields did on the field should still stand out. Fields is giving Bears fans a reason to be optimistic about the franchise's future. And that's without having to sweat and think about a lost third-overall pick via a trade-up to the second slot.

It's safe to say Mitchell Trubisky failed in Chicago, notwithstanding whether it was him who was the bigger problem or the way Matt Nagy handled the quarterback in Windy City. The fact is that the Bears gave up on him by declining their 2021 option on Trubisky and no one crucified Chicago for executing that move. In Justin Fields, the Bears are getting the thrill again. The preseason is nothing more than a glorified game but has Trubisky ever electrified Chicago faithful in the same way Fields is doing it right now?

Fields went 9 of 19 for 80 passing yards against the Bills and got taken to the ground twice for a loss of five yards. Trubisky actually had a better passing game than Fields, but the former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback showed out on the ground by rushing for 46 yards on four carries. Trubisky's revenge game that's composed of a 20-of-28 completion line for 221 passing yards and a touchdown with zero interceptions will be buried in football fans' collective memory, anyway.

Nothing that Fields has done so far in the preseason may convince Nagy to give him the starting duties in Week 1 of the regular season, but the day he hands the rookie the key to the offense under center is looking more and more inevitable each passing week. Nagy will always say the right thing about how Andy Dalton was signed to start for the Bears and that the veteran gives Chicago a better chance at winning for now, but he can only expect the fans to buy that for so long.
