Basketball Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar made quite a ton of money recently after earning a hefty sum from a number of auctioned memorabilia. His haul — which will mostly go to his own charity, the Skyhook Foundation — amounted to a cool $3 million as he reportedly auctioned off over 200 pieces of memorabilia, including four out of his six championship rings.

As detailed by Sports Illustrated's Charlotte Carroll, there were a number of basketball aficionados that were more than willing to shell out a considerable amount of money just to get their hands on Abdul-Jabbar's priceless memorabilia.

The items sold for $2,947,872.25, according to ESPN. His rings, which had starting bids of $60,000 to $65,000, netted four of the five highest sales at the auction's end. Abdul-Jabbar's 1987 ring sold for the most, going for $398,937.50. His ring from 1985 went for $343,700, while the two other rings from 1980 and 1988 went for $245,500 each.

The signed ball went for $270,050.

Abdul-Jabbar then went on to explain the motivation behind his decision to forgo some of his most prized material possessions which symbolized the legendary career he had has a pro.

“When it comes to choosing between storing a championship ring or trophy in a room, or providing kids with an opportunity to change their lives, the choice is pretty simple,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “Sell it all.”

This is definitely a noble gesture from one of the greatest to play the sport. Obviously, the six-time NBA MVP puts much more value on helping the less fortunate than adorning his own personal collection of memorabilia.
