Kawhi Leonard wouldn't let anything stop him from playing for his team during the NBA preseason.

Leonard's alma mater San Diego State held a Hall of Fame induction ceremony honoring him for being one of their best players ever.

He made the decision not to go in favor of playing in the Spurs preseason opener at AT&T Center versus the Miami Heat.

My goal right now is to get this team better. I thank San Diego State for honoring me and I wish those guys luck in the upcoming season. They understand what I'm trying to accomplish.

The decision was easy for Leonard and wasn't a bit of a surprise to coach Gregg Popovich at all.

Kawhi is a lot like Timmy (Duncan) in that regard. Accolades don't mean anything to him. He just wants to win NBA championships. It really is all he thinks about as far as basketball is concerned.

Leonard is arguably the San Diego State Aztecs greatest athlete. During his sophomore year he led the team to a 34 win season and a trip to the Sweet 16.

As one of the league's best two way players and greatest perimeter defenders, it's not enough yet to satisfy his hunger to be better.

That's something Spurs fans can appreciate a great deal.
