No one expected Collin Sexton to ascend to the top of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ pecking order and be the team’s alpha when he first entered the league.

The year was 2018 and LeBron James left the Cavs for the Los Angeles Lakers. Cleveland used the eighth pick during that year’s draft to select Sexton, an explosive guard from the University of Alabama, with plans of grooming him into a future cornerstone.

Suffice to say, the hype surrounding Sexton has yet to completely pan out. The Cavaliers finished the 2018-19 season with a 19-63 record, making them one of the worst teams in the league. The following season played along the same lines as well when Cleveland ended up with 19 wins and 46 losses.

There’s a chance the 2020-21 season can be very different for the Sexton. We take a look at where the Young Bull has been, where he is now, the potential road he can take, and what it all means for his value in the card market.

Collin Sexton’s rookie and sophomore seasons

In nutshell, Sexton’s first two seasons were slightly above average. On the other hand, the past two years were some of the worst in Cleveland franchise history.

The Young Bull’s reputation as a score-first guard wasn’t enough to turn the tide for the Cavs during these two seasons. While he can get buckets for his team, Sexton was limited in that role early in his career. He didn’t impact the game when it comes to defense or playmaking, two important areas Cleveland lacked during these seasons.

Needless to say, Sexton’s cons outweighed the pros he had during his first two seasons in the league. As a result, his card value isn’t as prominent as other members of the 2018 Draft Class, such as Luka Doncic and Trae Young.

Sexton’s third-year leap

Three years into his career and Sexton is finally entering the All-Star conversation. He’s currently averaging career-highs in points (23.6), assists, (4.1), and three-point percentage (43%) this season. The Young Bull is also leading Cleveland to its best start ever since James departed with a 10-15 record.

Nets, Kyrie Irving, James Harden, Kevin Durant, Cavs, Collin Sexton

The most evident sign of Sexton’s massive improvement this season was when the Cavaliers won against the Brooklyn Nets last January 20, 2021. In that game, Sexton scored 42 points, including several clutch plays, against Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and James Harden.

Thanks to his improvement, Sexton is solidifying his role as Cleveland’s top dog. With the right pieces surrounding him, the Young Bull has the chance to even go further and ascend to a whole new level down the line.

Are Collin Sexton rookie cards worth investing in?

Last December 26, 2020, Sexton’s base Prizm rookie card was auctioned off at $0.99. Keep in mind that the season just started and the hype surrounding the Young Bull’s card stock hasn’t even formed yet.

Just recently, the same card fetched $21.5 at an auction held last February 08, 2021. This represents a huge spike from where Sexton’s stock has been before the season started. Keep in mind that his value can still be considered affordable now. Furthermore, the Young Bull has a bright future ahead of him in the NBA.

Put these two thoughts together and you’ll conclude that Sexton’s cards are worth keeping. His leap is real and there is a ton of upside attached to this third-year player. It only stands to reason that hoarding Collin Sexton rookie cards is a good decision to make.
