The Houston Rockets are beginning to whittle down their list of head coaching candidates, and they told TNT analyst and former player Kenny Smith that he is no longer in the running, according to the Houston Chronicle's Jonathan Feigen:

Smith interviewed for the job last week. Feigen's source said Smith was “very impressive” and could become a head coach at some point in the future, but the Rockets are looking for coaches with experience — either as a head coach or assistant — which Smith doesn't have. So far, no other teams have been reported as having interest in Smith.

According to CBS Sports' Ken Berger, current ESPN broadcaster and former Rockets head coach Jeff Van Gundy is beginning to emerge as the top candidate for the job. However, Feigen points out that while Houston is interested, they have yet to meet with Van Gundy.

The Rockets have also expressed interest in several other candidates, including Frank Vogel, J.B. Bickerstaff, Ettore Messina, Jeff Hornacek, Mike D'Antoni and Sam Cassell.
