John Calipari's Kentucky Wildcats looked like they were going to avoid a first-round upset against Saint Peter's in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. After engaging in a tight affair throughout, Kentucky seemed to take control by going up 68-62 with 4:13 remaining. After forcing a turnover, the Wildcats had a chance to deliver the dagger.

Instead, Sahvir Wheeler committed one of numerous gaffes down the stretch, and Saint Peter's promptly finished the second half on a 9-3 run to send the game to overtime. The Peacocks dominated the overtime to earn a shocking 85-79 win over second-seeded Kentucky.

Calipari was flabbergasted at his team's failures, and he said that when you have that kind of lead late in the game, you just have to finish the job and win. However, he also pointed the finger at himself for failing to find the right answers as Kentucky collapsed.

Via ESPN's Mike Wells:

“This was probably something they never felt in their lives,” Calipari said. “And that's why I wish I had some answers with three minutes to go to help them through it to get by the first one. But I tell you what, we missed shots, and Saint Peter's made shots. They made 3s. They made layups; we missed. They made free throws; we missed.”

The Kentucky coach continued:

“It's one of those games that I was hoping I could get it by them to get them on to the next game to get their feet underneath them, and obviously I didn't do a very good job with it.”

This was truly a stunning loss for the Wildcats, who had one of the best players in the country in Oscar Tshiebwe on their side. Tshiebwe had a monster game, going for 30 points and 16 rebounds, but he didn't get much help from his teammates. Wheeler, TyTy Washington Jr. and Kellan Grady were all especially awful in the stunning defeat.

Calipari is facing a lot of criticism for this upset, and it's well-deserved at this point. This collapse comes a year after Kentucky didn't make the NCAA Tournament at all, and that's not acceptable for this program.
