Early this season, the Houston Rockets surprisingly fired Kevin McHale after a subpar start to the new year. He was just one season removed from a Western Conference Finals appearance, and he'd just begun a new three-year extension with the club.

Now, after surveying his options and enjoying the season off, McHale appears to be ready to get back into the game.

According to ESPN's Marc Stein, McHale has become one of the top candidates for the Sacramento Kings‘ head coaching vacancy after the firing of George Karl. Stein's sources indicated that general manager Vlade Divac and McHale have already started to engage in talks about the position.

Stein also mentions that former Timberwolves interim coach Sam Mitchell is the only person to have a full one-on-one interview with the Kings so far, and former Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro will meet with the franchise this week.

Apart from McHale and the two candidates listed above, Warriors assistant Luke Walton has been mentioned as a favorite for Divac and the Kings' front office. Walton is also in the running for the newly opened Los Angeles Lakers coaching job, where he spent most of his NBA career.

Leading the Sacramento Kings is an intriguing, yet risky proposition. If they can retain Rajon Rondo, they'll still have two world class players in him and All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins, but if the team is mentally unable to get on the same page once again, all of their talent may still result in another year without a playoff appearance.
