SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Davion Mitchell and the Sacramento Kings went to battle against the New Orleans Pelicans inside the Golden 1 Center on Tuesday night. The visiting team walked away with a 123-109 victory that eliminated the Kings from playoff contention. It's Sacramento’s 16th straight time missing the postseason.

However, the loss did have a silver lining, with Mitchell putting forth the best overall game of his rookie campaign. He scored 15 points and a Sacramento-era rookie record of 17 assists.

“My teammates were just making shots every time I was passing the ball,” Mitchell told ClutchPoints. “I didn't really realize it, but I felt like every time I passed the ball, my teammates were hitting shots, so credit to my teammates.”

This season, the rookie is averaging 11.2 points and 4.0 assists per game. From the beginning and now approaching the end, Mitchell has done nothing but improve as he looks to be a legitimate franchise cornerstone alongside De'Aaron Fox. His hard work and dedication led him to this big night individually in the Kings' final home game of the season.

“It makes you feel good, just to make history,” Mitchell said about his 17 assists. “But at the end of the day, we lost the game, so it really doesn't mean too much to me.”

Mitchell is as focused as rookies get. Individual accolades are cool to him, but his main goal is to make Sacramento proud and win games. That means helping his team get better and making it to the playoffs to break the NBA's longest postseason drought.

Mitchell is a 6-foot guard with a 7-footer's heart and toughness. He's a young player who only cares about winning, and that’s exactly what the Kings needed out of the 2021 draft. Next season he's going to be fun to watch.
