The Sacramento Kings will not be bringing back interim head coach Alvin Gentry for the 2022-2023 season, per Adrian Wojnarowski. The Kings will immediately open their head coaching job search.

Alvin Gentry took over as Kings head coach following Luke Walton's early season firing. He led the team to an underwhelming 24-41 record under his reign as head coach. Sacramento made a couple of trades during the season but still missed the playoffs for the 16th consecutive year.

Gentry could be in line for a different head coaching job based on experience alone. The 67-year old began his coaching career at Baylor in 1980 as an assistant. He worked his way through the college ranks and eventually ended up becoming an NBA assistant in 1988 with the Spurs. He went on to assist in Los Angeles with the Clippers, Miami, and Detroit.

His first head coaching experience came for a brief time in Miami before coaching the Pistons in 1997-1998. From 2000-2003, Gentry served as head coach for the Clippers. Alvin Gentry has since worked as a head coach for the Suns and Pelicans before joining Sacramento in 2020.

Gentry's wealth of experience and basketball knowledge could force teams to display interest in him. If not a head coaching job, Gentry would make for a great assistant if he would be open to that kind of position. However, front office work is also not out of the realm of possibility.

The Kings and Gentry are reportedly discussing a front office role. It is expected to be announced later this week whether or not Gentry will officially work in the Kings' front office. Regardless of whether Alvin Gentry is on the sidelines or in a front office next season, it is clear that he still has a future in the NBA.
