New York Knicks big man Bobby Portis was ejected on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Lakers after smacking Kentavious Caldwell-Pope across the head.
Portis, though, didn't mean to hurt Caldwell-Pope. The Knicks forward took to Twitter to apologize to KCP:
truly apologize to @CaldwellPope on this play..my intent was not to hurt him…was just trying to make a play on the ball…I come to compete everyday and I only know one way to play and that’s to give 100% … I’m glad he’s ok https://t.co/VXnWE67Gms

The Knicks got blown out by the Lakers, losing by a final score of 117-87. New York is now 10-27 on the season.
Bobby Portis is a fierce competitor who plays hard. He wasn't trying to hurt Kentavious Caldwell-Pope on this play. It just so happened he accidentally hit the Lakers guard in the head while going for the ball. These types of plays happen all the time in the NBA.
Portis signed a two-year, $31 million deal with the Knicks this past summer in free agency. He split time last season with the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards.
In 37 games for the Knicks, Portis is averaging 9.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists while shooting 44.0 percent from the field, 38.2 percent from beyond the arc and 75.0 percent from the free-throw line.
The Knicks will once again miss the playoffs this season. Portis could garner some interest on the trade market with the trade deadline less than a month away. Teams looking for tough power forwards could reach out to New York, just don't expect the Lakers to.
