Things are looking grim for the New York Knicks at the beginning of the 2019-20 NBA regular season, but head coach David Fizdale is still choosing to look at the bright side.

Currently tied with the Golden State Warriors with a league worst 2-8 slate, the Knicks are looking destined for yet another lottery selection in next year’s draft.

But upon closer look of the current Eastern Conference standings, New York is actually not that far behind from the eight seed. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Brooklyn Nets currently occupy the 7th and 8th slots with identical records of four wins and five losses.

According to Fizdale, the Knicks just need a couple of momentum-building victories to get right back in the hunt.

“For perspective, a good friend of mine told me never overreact to overreactors. We’re 2 games from the 8-seed. The team that’s in the eighth seed right now has 4 wins. It’s not that, like, oh my god everybody is acting like the world is coming to end. It’s not,” he said, per NBA reporter Mike Vurkunov.

The Knicks are currently right at the bottom of several major statistical categories like points (100.6), field goal percentage (42.4), free throw percentage (65.3) and assists (19.7).

They received a 21-point beating at home at the hands of Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, prompting team President Steve Mills and GM Scott Perry to make a rare appearance in front of the press.

The inspired performance of Marcus Morris Sr. and all-around play of rookie RJ Barett still gives the team some hope, but they certainly need to discover their identity soon if they wish to escape mediocrity this year.
