Despite the New York Knicks missing out on the top free agents, Dennis Smith Jr. is still confident that they can make the playoffs next season. After all, the Knickerbockers have him.

Smith is optimistic he can lead the team to the postseason, emphasizing that he worked hard to improve his game this summer and prepare himself to take over the team. The former Dallas Mavericks guard added that he likes the players they recently got in free agency.

“I think we can hit the playoffs. Everybody do a lot of talking and things like that,” Smith said, per Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.

“I’ve never really been one to feed into it on social media and things like that. But I think we have a really good team, and especially with the way I’ve been working this summer, I think I’m going to take my game to the next level and it’s going to put us in the playoffs.”

New York failed to lure Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to Madison Square Garden, with the two superstars choosing their crosstown rivals Brooklyn Nets in a stinging turn of events. The Knicks, in turn, settled with the likes of Julius Randle, Taj Gibson, Elfrid Payton, Bobby Portis, Reggie Bullock and Wayne Ellington.

While their recent additions are all mid-tier free agents, the Knicks are hopeful that they can contend for a postseason berth in the relatively weak Eastern Conference. Besides, they also have a promising young core with Smith, rookie RJ Barrett and sophomores Mitchell Robinson and Kevin Knox.

The Knicks have a lot to prove in the 2019-20 season, and with all the dysfunction and controversies surrounding the team, their fans could really use a playoff appearance.
