Veteran big man Enes Kanter was one of the many players on the move this past offseason as he was traded to the New York Knicks as part of the deal that landed All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Ahead of his first campaign with the Knicks, Kanter told Marc Berman of the New York Post that he believes reigning league MVP Russell Westbrook will talk to him about returning to the team in the future.
“I’ve actually wondered too if Russell [Westbrook] will say hi to me or not,’’ said Kanter, who played four seasons for the Thunder. “I hope they’re not going to boo me. I like them. They liked me. That’s different [with Durant]. I got traded. I didn’t leave.’’
Kanter has spent the last 2 1/2 seasons with the Thunder after being acquired from the Utah Jazz. In that span, he developed a strong bond with the organization, his various teammates, and the city of Oklahoma City.
The 25-year-0ld had also developed a strong friendship with Westbrook that extends off the court, which has been apparent by the numerous moments of subtle shade thrown at Kevin Durant this past season after he left the Thunder for the Golden State Warriors.
He has two years on his four-year, $70 million that includes an $18.6 million player option for the 2017-18 season, which means he will more than likely hit the free agent market next summer. Depending on how things shape up for the Thunder with Anthony and Paul George, Kanter could rejoin the team.
