New York Knicks big man Enes Kanter will opt into the last year of his contract with the team, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports.

This will pay Kanter the remaining $18.6 million he is owed for the last year of his deal, a decision he took likely due to the arid market that's bound to hit this season.

Kanter previously told reporters he planned to opt out of his contract shortly after the regular season ended, but his agent quickly reeled him back, saying his client was to evaluated all options before making a decision.

The Knicks are focused on clearing as much cap space as possible this season for a big 2019 free agency period, and are unlikely to dole out a long-term deal for Kanter.

Even if he rolled the dice by testing the free agency waters, Kanter was an unlikely candidate to receive a beefy long-term offer for his services, now better served playing out the 2018-19 season and hoping his performance will make a case for a big pay day next offseason.

Kanter averaged 14.1 points and 11.0 rebounds per game last season, posting the best numbers of his NBA career through 71 starts with the Knickerbockers.
