Since he entered the NBA back in 2015, Kristaps Porzingis has continued to impress with his unique skill set for someone with his physical gifts. That has made him one of the league’s top rising stars, and the current franchise player of the New York Knicks. He is expected to be offered a max extension next summer, and it could be something he won’t be able to resist.

Despite his brother’s recent comments that may suggest some dissatisfaction he may feel toward the franchise, he could still be forced to sign the extension, according to Tommy Beers of Basketball Insiders. He explained the risk the Latvian big man will take if he declines it, and also how much he will only earn two seasons from now should he opt not to sign the new, and significantly larger, contract.

Kristaps Porzingis has started this season on fire, and is playing the best basketball of his young career. Through seven games for the Knicks, he is producing career-best numbers of 27.9 points and 7.9 rebounds, to go along with 1.1 assists and 1.6 blocks in 33.1 minutes per game. He has been the main reason why the Knicks were able to win three straight matches, before snapping their winning streak on Wednesday night against the Houston Rockets.

It remains to be seen if Kristaps Porzingis will indeed sign the max offer after the season or not, but with the arguments Beers cited, it will be difficult to see him decline it. He will surely generate a lot of interest from teams around the league if he hits free agency, but the Knicks are in a very good position to re-sign him. If they make it to the playoffs this year, it will give Porzingis more reason to continue his career in New York, as it could make him think that winning it all is a possibility with the team.
