Tom Thibodeau has long had a reputation for being a stubborn coach, refusing to change with the times. In an era where ICE coverages were practically solved, Thibs forced them on his teams. Now, entering his second year with the New York Knicks, Thibodeau has enacted a surprisingly modern mandate for his players.

The Knicks offense took an outstanding 52 three-point attempts in the pre-season game against the Washington Wizards. When Derrick Rose was asked about that after the game, the former MVP had this to say. (via The New York Post)

“I’m not going to give you the set number Thibs told us to get but that’s pretty good. It’s above the set number he told us. They’re all good looks. Where Kemba [Walker] is walking into 3s. He’s great off the dribble. RJ [Barrett] is the same. I’m more of a catch-and-shoot. But everyone’s making the game easier for the next person. When you have an offensive team like we have, it should make the game easier.’’

The Knicks were thoroughly dismantled by new NY villian Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks in the first round last season. After that brutal beatdown, it was clear that the offense needed some tweaks. They ranked 22th in offensive efficiency last season, 30th in pace, and 27th in three-point attempts.

The old Thibodeau would've likely doubled down and ran the same terrible offense without changing anything. However, this year, it seems like the Knicks coach has learned the error of his ways. Now, Thibs has mandated his team to change up the pace and start shooting more. This is in-line with their recent roster additions of Evan Fournier and Kemba Walker providing more shooting to the Knicks.

Knicks fans have a lot to look forward to this season. Thibs and the team are looking to build from their solid 2020 season and are trying to break through.
