The New York Knicks rookie Obi Toppin suffered a strained right calf in the Knicks season opener. Ian Begley of SNY tv tweeted on Toppin's condition:

Toppin, the number eight pick in this year's NBA draft from Dayton did not practice after the season opener against the Indiana Pacers. The injury clearly bothered him afterwards as he did not play against the Philadelphia 76ers, reported by Cody Taylor of Rookie Wire.

If this continues to be a nagging injury for Toppin, this could be a big blow for the Knicks. The absence of the versatile big man on the court can prove to be detrimental for a young team trying to develop their identity.

Known for his long wingspan and incredible athleticism, NBA's scouting report emphasized his ability to work the pick and roll as well as shoot it from beyond the arc. His ability to open up the defense with his great screen setting ability make him a dynamic offensive frontcourt weapon. This versatility could also alleviate pressure from the guards due to his fantastic ball-handling skills for a relatively big man can allow the Knicks to diversify their offense.

Without Toppin in the lineup, the Knicks are facing the Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Toronto Raptors this upcoming week. Already losing the first two games of the season, the Knicks should be worried as they are en route to another horrible start to the season.

Finishing with a 21-45 record and in 12th in the Eastern Conference last season, the Knicks are a far-cry from when they last made the playoffs in the 2012-2013 season. With a tough schedule ahead of them this upcoming week, especially without Toppin's presence, the Knicks will need the leadership of players such as RJ Barret and Julius Randle to step up offensively and compete.
