New York Knicks point guard Dennis Smith Jr. is dealing with a lingering back injury that could leave him sidelined for the remainder of this season, according to a report from Marc Berman of the New York Post.

With just four games remaining on their schedule, Knicks head coach David Fizdale still isn’t sure if Smith will be well enough to play before the season's end.

Smith tells the New York Post that he re-injured his back in Saturday’s game against the Miami Heat. If he is ruled out for Friday night's game against the Rockets — a likely scenario — it will be his third straight DNP (nine of the last 10). Currently, he's listed as questionable.

In a concerning revelation, Smith said last week the back discomfort is related to a misplaced disk and would require long-term maintenance.

“Something that’s lingering,’’ said Smith, who has played 19 games for the Knicks. “I got some good trainers on the staff. They’ve been doing a good job of taking care of me. … My goal is to get back to 100 percent. That’s what we’re focused on.”

Though this season is coming to a close, Smith noted that he would like to play if cleared:

“If I’m able to,’’ Smith said. “If I’m able to play at any time, I’m going to play — even if it’s the last game.”

Smith made 19 appearances with the Knicks this season (17 starts), averaging 14.1 points on 40.7 percent shooting from the field (27.5 percent from beyond the arc), 5.5 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 28.4 minutes per outing.

Friday night's Knicks-Rockets game is scheduled to tip inside the Toyota Center at 8:00 p.m. ET.
