Despite finishing the 2018-19 season with the worst record in the league at 15-67, the New York Knicks find themselves in a rather enviable position heading into this summer.

New York will share the top odds (14 percent) of landing the no. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft along with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns, and their mid-season trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas gives them the capability to sign two max free agents.

Given the unpredictability of the draft lottery as well as New York's desperation in signing two marquee names in free agency, Knicks president of basketball operations Steve Mills understands that the team may not be able to bring back some of their players on the current roster.

“We tell the guys, ‘This is what you did great, this is what you need to improve on. Assuming you get better at these things, we’d love to have you back as part of our group, depending on what happens with the draft, depending on what happens with free agency and also depending on what the business of this league looks like,’” Steve Mills told Brian Mahoney of the Associated Press.

“We’ve had a lot of guys that improved in games over the course of this season and they may be in a position that no matter what we do, we may not have enough money to pay what they’re going to get paid from someone else.”

Indeed, the Knicks saw some impressive showings from youngsters like Mitchell Robinson and Kevin Knox, while DeAndre Jordan played well in 19 games in New York after coming over from Dallas in the Porzingis trade.

However, for a franchise that has been starved of a winning culture for years, it would appear that nobody is safe this summer.
