The New York Knicks' 4-1 record to start off the season has New York City buzzing. The excitement isn't limited to just fans of the team.

Earl Monroe, a Hall-of-Fame guard and franchise legend who helped lead the Knicks to the 1973 NBA title, said on SiriusXM NBA Radio that the team is one big-time player away from being in true championship contention.

“I think they've done a good job of assembling guys — not only young guys, but also older guys,” Monroe said. “If anything, one more player they could get…that would put them right there in that elite class that they could really challenge for an NBA championship.”

Just who that one key player would be remains to be seen. The NBA trade market is not yet forming, and one of the main players that may be available, Kyrie Irving, isn't a viable option, since he would be subjected to the same vaccine mandates that have him away from the Brooklyn Nets. Still, for a team to be just one key player away from title contention in the eyes of a Hall of Famer is a strong endorsement.

The Knicks' additions in free agency, Kemba Walker and Evan Fournier, as well as a tweak in coaching from Tom Thibodeau, have improved their offense so far. New York's next game is on Saturday on the road against the New Orleans Pelicans.
