The New York Knicks might still be hoping to sign at least one of the “Banana Boat” crew this offseason.

Ian Begley of SNY suggested in September the Knicks might hope to bring back Carmelo Anthony in the event New York could pull off a trade for Chris Paul.

However, it seems Leon Rose and the Knicks have interest in signing Anthony regardless of whether they can orchestrate a deal for Paul or not.

Marc Berman of the New York Post reported Friday afternoon the ‘Bockers will engage Anthony in contract negotiations this offseason:

The Knicks still plan to pursue ex-Knick Carmelo Anthony even if they can’t pull off a trade for his buddy Chris Paul. The Post has reported Anthony would be eager to join the Knicks if they land Paul.

Anthony endeared himself to Knicks fans during his six-plus year run with the team, which lasted from 2011 to 2017.

The Brooklyn native made seven All-Star teams with the Knicks and also won the scoring title during the 2012-13 season. Anthony was a member of New York's last playoff team, and was still a 20-plus-point scorer for a franchise clearly entering the rebuilding phase in his last few seasons in the Big Apple.

There has been speculation the Knicks would entertain trading for a star point guard this offseason, with Paul and Russell Westbrook at the top of the list.

Perhaps Rose and Knicks management will look to emulate the Oklahoma City Thunder's strategy by bringing in Melo and the “Point God” to be veteran leaders for a young roster in desperate need of guidance and development.

Even if New York fails to land Paul, however, a reunion with Anthony could be in the cards. That is, unless Carmelo still prefers to remain with the Portland Trail Blazers.
