What do the Orlando Magic think about this: Dennis Smith Jr. was having a horrendous 2019-20 season with the New York Knicks. When the Knicks acquired him last year, many thought he could finally become their point guard of the future. However, the opposite has happened so far, as he finds himself behind Elfrid Payton and Frank Ntilikina as the third-string point guard.

With how his time in New York has gone wrong, there are rumblings that the former 9th overall pick may be on the way out. According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, the Knicks may opt to trade Smith this off-season.

New president Leon Rose has no political attachment to Smith like Mills did. Trading Smith will be an option in the offseason as the Knicks try to figure out their point-guard solution.

The report also suggests that the Orlando Magic may be interested in acquiring the athletic 6-foot-2 guard.

Minnesota had some interest, but the additions of D’Angelo Russell and combo guard Malik Beasley make the Timberwolves less likely to pounce. The Magic could be a suitor.

Around a year ago, Orlando did the same by acquiring Markelle Fultz from the Philadelphia 76ers. Fultz is having quite the turn around campaign for the Magic. This season, the former first overall pick is averaging 12.1 points, 5.2 assists, and 1.3 steals as the starting point guard for Orlando.

The change in scenery has certainly worked wonders for Fultz. Some people in the NBA believe Smith could benefit from this as well.

Some NBA sources believe Smith, with his age and seemingly unlucky journey in New York, could be a good risk in “the second draft.” That is first-round picks still on their rookie contracts who need a change of scenery.

Smith, currently with the Knicks, certainly has a lot of talent and has plenty of tools to be an effective player in the NBA. However, given how Orlando currently has Fultz, perhaps this might not be the greatest of fits.

Nevertheless, this could be another low-risk, high-reward move for the Magic. Perhaps they can help turn Smith's career around just like they did with Fultz. The Knicks might want to test this possibility.
