The New York Knicks have a legitimate internal support for Kenny Atkinson to become their next head coach, according to SNY's Ian Begley.

This comes on the heels of Tom Thibodeau being the longtime frontrunner to take the job. Others like former Knicks coach Mike Woodson and interim coach Mike Miller are still up for discussion and fully expected to interview for the position.

Native New Yorker Mark Jackson and former player Jason Kidd have their share of fans inside the Knicks brass, but neither has been a palpable candidate for the job.

Atkinson, another native New Yorker who coached the Brooklyn Nets for the past 3.5 seasons, has some strong internal support within the team. Yet Thibodeau still remains the most likely man to take the job if team president Leon Rose chooses to part ways with Miller at the helm.

Atkinson posted his lone winning season in 2018-19 with a 42-40 win-loss record. In fairness, the young coach was asked to take over during a rebuilding time, amassing a 118-190 overall record in his near-four seasons as a head coach.

The 53-year-old Northport native agreed to part ways with the Nets earlier in the year after it became evident the team had other plans to run their newly superstar-laced organization after signing Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant over the summer.
