All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving's long-term future with the Boston Celtics has become the center of attention around the league over the last several days. Irving has already indicated that he will likely head into free agency next offseason where a plethora of teams could be making a strong push to sign him to a lucrative deal.

This has pushed forward the notion that the New York Knicks could be a likely landing spot for him on the open market in the summer of 2019. According to Keith Britton of 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, Ian Begley of ESPN that the Knicks will have a “strong chance” to land Irving in free agency.

The Knicks have steadily been ingrained into the picture given that the team was originally on Irving's shortlist for trade destinations before the Cleveland Cavaliers moved him to the Celtics last offseason. There has also been talk that he has voiced behind the scenes to former teammates in Cleveland that he would like to play near his hometown with New York if given the opportunity.

This coupled with the fact that he has spoken quite highly of All-Star forward Kristaps Porzingis prior to the All-Star game earlier this year, it all points to him having some level of strong interest in that scenario. Given that may be the case, it is fair to assume that New York will position themselves to be able to present a lucrative offer in free agency to possibly lure in Irving next summer.

Much could change from now until then, but the Knicks will be in the picture as a strong possibility to land the 26-year-old in free agency regardless of what may unfold for the Celtics next season. It is a fluid situation that should remain a huge topic of discussion as long as Irving is without a new long-term deal in place with Boston.
