The New York Knicks are on their way to another losing season if they don’t turn things around by season’s end. Head coach Jeff Hornacek, however, doesn’t have all the pieces he needs to compete. Despite this, Hornacek may not be in the coaching seat for long as the Knicks are reportedly interested in hiring Mark Jackson as his replacement, says the New York Daily News’ Frank Isola.

Jackson, the former Golden State Warriors coach for three years, is one of the most sought-after coaches in the NBA. His last assignment for them was in the 2013-14 season but his thumbprint in the current team’s makeup can still be felt.

According to Isola, “whispers of Mark Jackson possibly returning to New York one day grow louder.”

Isola also reports that “two coaches from different staffs told me they keep hearing Jackson's name floated out as a possible successor when and if the Knicks were to make a change.”

The Knicks are rebuilding and Hornacek has been given the impossible task of trying to win with a team that just lost one of its best and most popular players in Carmelo Anthony. Given the situation he walked into this season, winning 20 games while losing 25 is quite remarkable. And the losses aren’t entirely his fault either.

But the Knicks may fire Hornacek regardless of how this season ends for them, knowing that there’s a better coach waiting in the wings. That is, unless somebody hires Jackson first.
