Just a couple of years ago, it seemed as if Carmelo Anthony's NBA career was dead in the water. However, Anthony enjoyed a resurgence with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2019-20 and 2020-21 before spending this season with the Los Angeles Lakers. With Melo set to hit free agency again, could a reunion with the New York Knicks be in store?

Marc Berman of the New York Post says “Knicks brass has had internal conversations about Anthony.” Berman cautions that there are way more pressing concerns this offseason after a disappointing 2021-22 campaign, but bringing back Melo seems to at least be on New York's radar.

Anthony averaged 13.3 points and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 44.1% from the field and 37.5% from 3-point range in 26.0 minutes per game for the Lakers this season. Melo can still shoot the hell out of the ball from deep, but he probably shouldn't be playing quite as big a role anymore because of his overall decline and shortcomings. But as a 3-point specialist off the bench, he still has some value.

The Knicks will be looking to change things up a bit after going 37-45 this season. This was especially disappointing after their surprise playoff campaign in 2020-21. Julius Randle fell back down to earth and the team just never meshed under Tom Thibodeau like the previous season.

New York knows some changes must be made to improve the roster. Anthony shouldn't be a prime target this offseason because he's not that good anymore, but a return could work in the right circumstances.
