The New York Knicks have a chance to acquire veteran guard Chris Paul this upcoming offseason via trade. They have the cap space and the assets to do so. What many fans do not know is that they actually had a chance to land the star guard last year but chose not to.

Per Marc Berman of the New York Post, Paul had been linked to the Knicks through his former agent Leon Rose. However, Steve Mills didn't vest interest in Paul, seeing his age as a liability.

“Rose tried to get Houston to trade Paul to the Knicks last offseason, but former team president Steve Mills wanted no part of reversing his youth movement. The Knicks have stockpiled draft picks for an occasion like this.”

Paul was made aware of such rumors. Interestingly, he panned the discussion, tagging it as a distraction from the Knicks' controversy involving filmmaker and die-hard fan Spike Lee.

Mills' point was understandable enough. Since the consensus during that time was that Paul — despite still being better than most guards in the league — was at the tail end of his career. Many thought that after he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder, he would fade out of the radar and into retirement.

But as the 2019-20 season unfolded, Paul proved that he wasn't just in tiptop form. He could also lead a group filled with young guns to the playoffs.

With Mills out of the picture, Rose now has free rein come up with a trade package for Paul. And this time, he might finally seal the deal.
