The New York Knicks have secured the services of former Wisconsin standout Nigel Hayes as both parties agree to a partially-guaranteed contract, according to a tweet made by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

A 6-foot-7 swingman, Hayes will give the Knicks more depth to their shooting guard and small forward rotation. His addition can also be considered a low-risk high-reward prospect, as they are not committing a lot of money on him, but could reap the rewards of his upside should he further develop his game.

The 22-year-old went undrafted in this year’s draft, but impressed the team’s scouts during the Summer League, where he was a part of the Knicks’ squad. He averaged 5.2 points and 5.0 rebounds in limited minutes, but showed off his versatility and ability to score and rebound.

Hayes is expected to compete for a roster spot once training camp starts. Should he make the final lineup, he will come off the bench and could relieve either Carmelo Anthony or Tim Hardaway Jr., depending on matchups. However, if the Knicks feel he needs to put more work and gain additional experience, they also have the option to send him to their G-League affiliate.
