New York Knicks point guard Dennis Smith Jr. was in a giving mood earlier this week. In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, the former No. 9 overall pick was seen handing out team-related gift bags while being escorted on a trike through Central Park.
After tossing a few gift bags to the runners from the trike, Smith stood on a sidewalk to encourage them along their way:
âFree New York Knicks gear!â Smith told the runners as he handed out the bags. âKeep running!â
Curiously, one of the runners that stopped to chat with Smith was wearing an Orlando Magic jersey. Smith didn't seem to mind, though. In fact, the two paused for a quick photo.

Smith, now 21 years of age, came to the Knicks by way of a blockbuster trade with the Dallas Mavericks at this year's trade deadline (Feb. 7). As part of the deal, New York sent Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee and Trey Burke to Dallas, while Dennis Smith Jr., DeAndre Jordan, Wesley Matthews and two future first-round draft picks went to the Knicks.
Though he's only been with the Knicks for a relatively short period of time, Smith has made a name for himself. In his 21 appearances with the team during their 2018-19 regular season campaign (18 starts), he racked up averages of 14.7 points on 41.3 percent shooting from the field (28.9 percent from beyond the arc), 5.4 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 28.6 minutes per outing.
