The last time the New York Knicks and their fans celebrated a championship was 1973, well before rookie sensation Kristaps Porzingis was born. Those iconic teams from over 40 years ago are still celebrated today, but Porzingis wants to turn the page in the franchise's history.

From Nikos Varlas of Euro Hoops:

“My number one goal is to win the championship one day”.

“…That’s all we have in our heads, but we have to go step by step. We are not going to win a championship in one day. We have to start building, we have to first make it to the playoffs. That’s the number one goal right now. Get to the playoffs and then go game by game, day by day…”

The Knicks certainly improved from their terrible 2014-15 campaign, but missing the postseason once again with a 32-50 record isn't exactly something to be proud of for their starved fanbase. For almost half the season, the Knicks were actually in the hunt for one of the last playoff spots in the East, but their postseason dreams eventually dwindled away.

As Porzingis noted, there's a very long way to go before New York can consider themselves as title contenders, but he's confident that they're taking the necessary steps in the right direction.

More, from Varlas:

“…It’s not easy what we want to achieve, but I think that we, the fans and the organization has something to look forward to. I think we are growing and one day we want to win a championship, that’s it.”

Porzingis averaged 14.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game during his first NBA season, good enough to earn him a spot on the All-NBA rookie first team. Considering how Knicks fans responded when he was drafted, Porzingis has already come a long way, but his journey is just beginning.
