The Los Angeles Lakers hurt – or delayed – the San Antonio Spurs’ quest to secure a playoff spot this season, as they beat Gregg Popovich’s squad Wednesday at home in overtime, 122-112. The win would not have been possible for the Lakers had it not for Kuzma, whose heroics equated to a 30-point night. Kuzma shot 11-for-23 from the field and nailed five three-pointers to go with five rebounds.

Although the Lakers are not in the running of a playoff spot, Kuzma played like something was on the line for the Lakers. He was on the floor for 43 minutes and was clearly the focal point of the Lakers’ offense on plenty of their possessions.

It was not just an “ordinary” big-game night for Kuzma, however. According to Stat Muse, Kuzma’s performance against the Spurs made him the first Lakers rookie since Magic Johnson in 1979-1980 campaign to have at least four 30-point nights in a season. Magic Johnson had four 30-point games in his first year in the pros.

The Lakers did not need another 30-point outing from Kuzma to prove to the rest of the NBA that they got a steal in last year’s draft. Kuzma was selected by the Lakers 27th overall in 2017 using the Brooklyn Nets pick they got along with Brook Lopez in exchange for D’Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov.

The Lakers have four more games left on their regular-season schedule, meaning Kuzma could still add more to his 30-point games total. That’s going to be easier said than done, though, as the play the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Utah Jazz, the Houston Rockets, and the L.A. Clippers in their next games.
