Blockchain history was made on Wednesday after a LeBron James digital collectible on the popular NFT platform NBA Top Shot was sold for $230,023. The Los Angeles Lakers star was the previous record-holder with a digital asset from a similar class that was acquired last March for $210,000. This latest purchase marks the highest ever sale done on the platform since it started back in July 2020.

This record-breaking purchase was made by a collector named @easyaces late Wednesday evening and was immediately announced by the platform on Twitter:

For those who are unfamiliar, NBA Top Shot is a digital product backed by the NBA that uses blockchain technology to allow NBA fans to buy, sell, and trade different collectibles called “Moments.” Similar to the traditional trading cards that have been alive since the late 1950s, these collectibles feature specific plays from their favorite NBA stars from recent history. Obviously, given the amount of clout and success the Lakers star is sitting on, a lot of people consider LeBron James to be the blue-chip stock on NBA Top Shot and the data agrees.

This specific Moment is one of the most iconic plays in the NBA Top Shot Marketplace. It was from Game 6 of the 2020 NBA Finals where James cemented his legacy by winning his fourth NBA title. In addition, aside from it being part of the top tier category called “Legendary,” only 79 editions have been produced ever–making it one of the more elusive collectibles in the space.

Although the lowest you can purchase that Moment right now is just at $80,000, @easyaces spent a premium for purchasing the very special serial number 23/79.  Not a bad way to spend a quarter-million dollars, huh?
