Heading into his first NBA season, Los Angeles Lakers rookie point guard Lonzo Ball has a huge amount of expectations laid upon his shoulders.

This grew just a bit more once again as he was ranked as the 45th best player in the NBA by Slam Magazine. Among the reasons pointed out to justify his rankings were:

  • He’s unselfish as hell and his teammates are going to have a lot of fun hooping alongside him
  • He’s good for one or two “Daaaaaamn!” highlights per game, at minimum
  • He needs to become a slightly better jumpshooter, which is something you can say for approximately 93 percent of rookies
  • His ceiling is very, very high—like Jason Kidd-meets-Penny Hardaway high
  • He’s going to be the 45th best player in the NBA this season, and then in the ensuing years he’s going to be ranked even higher

Lonzo Ball has yet to take the floor for a regular season game and already has many buying into the hype that's been steadily built around him. This was only fueled by the strong showing he had at the Las Vegas Summer League where he was named the MVP after helping lead the Lakers to the title game while averaging 16.3 points, 9.3 assists, and 7.7 rebounds per game including a pair of triple-doubles.

There's a tremendous weight of expectations from the Lakers as his teammates and coaches alike have voiced nothing but praise toward him. Team president Magic Johnson had even called him the new face of the organization before even playing a single game.

The opportunity is there for Lonzo Ball to quickly prove that can be the transformative player the Lakers are desperately searching to lead them back to relevance in the NBA.
