While the success of NBA teams are usually measured on how many wins they get in a season, or how deep they’ll go in the playoffs, Magic Johnson does not believe in those being sole bases.

The Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations made an appearance on the latest episode of ESPN’s “First Take,” where he shared his thoughts on the current lineup of his team. Johnson also added that he will be happy if the Lakers show a lot of progression during next season, even without making it to the postseason.

“I’m excited. It’s going to be tough for us because the West is better, but I’m not gauging our team based on if we make the playoffs or not. As long as we get better, week-to-week, month-to-month, and keep growing,” Johnson said.

This summer, Magic Johnson and company have been busy trying to form the best possible lineup they can have. They’ve added key players like Brook Lopez, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and the second overall pick of last June’s draft, Lonzo Ball. The moves have made their fans very excited for the coming season, and the expectations are continuing to rise for the young team.

However, with the NBA legend’s statement, it will lessen the weight the players may have on their shoulders now, as it gives them more time to develop as a group.

It is also very understandable why the Los Angeles faithful are already raising their hopes on the team’s chances, as they have been used to seeing them win and compete for the title. But that has not been the case recently, as they’ve had four consecutive losing seasons. Johnson is obviously keeping the expectations in check, and would like to also send a message across that he will be patient in waiting for the young Lakers squad to blossom together and bring continuous success in the future.
