NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued an official statement following the death of NBA and Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant as a result of a helicopter crash on Sunday morning in Calabasas.

Silver iterated that Kobe was a tremendous talent, but also that he would most be remembered for “inspiring people around the world to pick up a basketball and compete to the very best of their ability:”

News of Kobe Bryant's death arrived right around the start of NBA action on Sunday.

The Denver Nuggets held an extended moment of silence in the wake of the tragedy. The San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors each took turns running down the entirety of the 24-second shot clock in honor of Bryant, who wore the No. 24 with the Los Angeles Lakers.

It is unknown whether the league considered canceling the slate of games today, though it took some time to obtain confirmation of TMZ's initial report. Exact details of the crash are still unknown, with the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department set to host a press conference shortly.

More details to come.
