Following the Los Angeles Lakers' loss to the New York Knicks on Tuesday night, Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook, and Frank Vogel shared their feelings about LeBron James' one-game suspension as a result of his flagrant-2 foul on Detroit Pistons big-man Isaiah Stewart.

“I was surprised,” Anthony Davis said about the NBA's decision to give LeBron his first suspension since high school. “I didn't think he would get suspended. I don't think anyone thought he was going to be suspended, to be honest. It was an accident. He accidentally hit him in the face. But I guess the report came out that his hit to the face caused an incident, which is weird because he can't control how the guy is going to react. Guys get hit in the face all the time, and we're saying that caused the incident.”

Davis has a point. The NBA's statement said LeBron was suspended for “recklessly hitting Stewart in the face and initiating an on-court altercation.” And of course: the entire kerfuffle would have been avoided had LeBron not elbowed Stewart in the head in the first place — an unnecessarily careless gesture. But, James immediately acknowledged his mistake and tried to make amends before the situation escalated. Had Stewart not lost his temper (however justified), it's fair to wonder if LeBron would have earned as harsh of a penalty.

James has no history of being a dirty player and had only been ejected one time in his 19-year career. According to reports, the Lakers star tried to track down Stewart after the game and explain that the situation was an accident.

“It's a little surprising,” Westbrook said. “Obviously, we've all seen the video and kind of what happened. They made their decision. There's no need for myself or anybody else to continue talking about it or try to figure it out. We've got a game tomorrow. LeBron will be back then.”

Vogel addressed the suspension in his pregame remarks.

“It's unfortunate. We all know LeBron's one of the classiest guys in the league and plays the game the right way, at all times.”

Davis and Vogel's take aligns with their comments after the Pistons win.

“Everyone in the league knows LeBron’s not a dirty guy,” AD said. “As soon as he did it, he looked back at him like, ‘Oh, my bad. I didn’t try to do it.’”

Vogel said he believed the contact was inadvertent.

“(LeBron) had an elbow to the rib cage, which was a foul and (Stewart) was trying to shed the contact. Had incidental contact that was obviously enough for a flagrant-2.”

As Westbrook noted, the Lakers will get LeBron back on Wednesday as they wrap up their road trip with a matchup against the Indiana Pacers.
