Austin Reaves became the darling of the Los Angeles Lakers last season. The undrafted rookie became a fan favorite for his gritty style of play, endearing him to fans. As a result, the fanbase gave Reaves a couple of interesting nicknames: “AR-15” (in reference to his initials and jersey number), and “Hillbilly Kobe”.

Recently, Austin Reaves revealed that he would prefer to ditch these nicknames altogether. The Lakers guard admitted that while it was touching to get a nickname from the fanbase, recent events have soured him on his nicknames. (via Dave McMenamin)

“I don't condone any gun violence that happens around our country,” Reaves told ESPN. “But you can't really control what [nickname] people give you. I mean, I didn't come out and say my name was that. There's been others, like the ‘Hillbilly Kobe,' that probably aren't the best thing in the situation that's going on, with Kobe's passing.”

An AR-15 rifle was used during the tragic Uvalde shooting in May this year. Gun violence has been a rampant problem in the United States for a long time, but it has been exacerbated recently. It makes sense for the Lakers guard to try and distance himself from that nickname, considering the current discourse towards guns.

As for the Hillbilly nickname, it's possible that Reaves doesn't feel comfortable using Kobe's name in his nickname. The Lakers legend is, well, a legend amongst NBA players, and having your nickname be a variation on his name is a bit weird.

Whatever nickname will be bestowed upon him, Reaves will be a vital cog in the Lakers' road to the playoffs next season. Hopefully, he delivers on the promise he showed last season.
