The Los Angeles Lakers have missed out on most of the star players they've tried to sign or trade for this season. Yes, they have struck gold with LeBron James, locking him to a four-year deal, but the rest has been a strike and miss for the Purple and Gold franchise.

Paul George decided to stay with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the San Antonio Spurs didn't trade them Kawhi Leonard who was later sent to the Toronto Raptors, and just recently, they failed to acquire Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Lakers will once again try their luck in this summer, as guys like Leonard, Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving are set to become free agents. They will also re-open the Davis trade negotiations with the Pelicans. However, former Cleveland Cavaliers GM David Griffin believes that Los Angeles doesn't need to land a superstar to pair with LeBron.

“I think way too much is put into the idea that you have max cap space for two max players, and therefore you must land the plane on key free agents. I don’t think that’s the case, and I don’t think you need to land the plane of Anthony Davis,” Griffin told Michael Shapiro of Sports Illustrated.

“You need to maximize your asset value all the time, and no harm befalls you as long as you don’t use that space poorly. So it doesn’t have to have a name attached to it, their next asset doesn’t have to be Anthony Davis. If they remain flexible they’ll be able to accumulate the right assets for the good of the franchise.”

The Lakers have a promising young core of Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma and Josh Hart, and although they have struggled as of late, they have also shown individual potential to become great players in the league. With the right development, they can be the right complimentary pieces to a championship team that is led by James.
