Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Dion Waiters penned an interesting article for The Players' Tribune. In it he covered a number of intriguing aspects of his rather controversial career, which also included his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

According to the Lakers guard, he was just a young man who was simply in over his head during his stint with LeBron James and the Cavs:

“I ain’t gonna lie to you. Back then, in those Cleveland days? I was still a kid, too. A dumbass kid, trying to figure it out. [LeBron James] used to show me different wines, different kinds of food. I was Philly Philly. I was raw. But Bron took me under his wing — and now all these years later, here we are again. Less hair, more wisdom. Life is crazy, right? Damn.”

It has been a rather winding road to the Lakers for Waiters. After two successful seasons with Syracuse, Cleveland selected a then-21-year-old Waiters fourth overall in the 2012 NBA Draft. He had a somewhat productive two and a half seasons playing alongside LeBron, but there were some chemistry issues that hurt the team on the court.

In 2015, the Cavs traded him to the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he would play for a season and a half before signing with the Miami Heat as a free agent in 2016.

Waiters had an injury-ridden three years with Miami. This came to an end just this past February when the Heat opted to trade him to the Memphis Grizzlies following a series of team-issued suspensions for his actions that were “detrimental to the team.”

The Lakers threw him a lifeline by gambling on him and offering him a contract for the rest of the season after he was quickly waived by the Grizzlies following the Heat trade.

For Waiters, it has come full circle for him now that he's back playing alongside LeBron on the Lakers, though he hasn't gotten the chance to suit up yet because of the NBA hiatus. Still, he wasn't the only one overjoyed at this opportunity:

“When my son found out I was going to the Lakers, he went bananas. Buh-nanas, bro. He’s known Bron since he was a baby, when we were in Cleveland. That’s his guy.”

Waiters is currently just 28, and it seems that he still has a lot of basketball ahead of him. For his sake, we hope the Lakers guard keeps his head on straight this time around.
