In the NBA, coaching matters. Los Angeles Lakers coach Frank Vogel knows and understands this already. Outside of already experimenting with LeBron James at the point guard position, he already has a plan in place for Anthony Davis.

Vogel, like the rest of us, sees the potential of the James-Davis tandem. And if James is running the point, he may allow Davis to close games out at the center position.

Davis playing center will overwhelm teams attempting to go small to combat the Lakers’ size. While playing Dwight Howard at center is serviceable in the beginning, Davis’ skillset in crunch time fits better. In half-court sets offensively, Davis can punish teams in the paint, while serving as a stretch-five kick out for James as he drives the lane.

On defense, Davis can naturally be an elite rim protector. Against the Utah Jazz this past Friday night, Davis was switched to the center at halftime. The results? he finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, five blocks, and two steals. The move was made to counter the Jazz’s Rudy Gobert, who can stifle teams with a center who isn’t that versatile.

With Davis at the center, it allowed the Lakers to play smaller but faster. Because of Davis scoring abilities, it brought Gobert away from the rim. Here, is what Vogel envisions for Davis and the Lakers to close out games. And he has the talent to do it outside of Davis and James.

For the Lakers, expectations are championship or bust for some. They have the talent, it’s apparent they may have the coaching, too.
