Breaking news: Los Angeles Lakers guard Russell Westbrook is pretty, pretty, good at basketball.

Two days into Lakers training camp, Westbrook has already impressed Frank Vogel, LeBron James, and his Lakers teammates. Nobody is surprised, of course, but they still haven't been able to curb their enthusiasm.

“Russell Westbrook’s pretty good. He’s good at basketball,” Vogel said following Thursday's practice, sarcastically stating the obvious. “His speed, and not just in the open court — the downhill driving, paint-attacking nature of his game has really been something else to watch up close in practice the last couple days. I think Lakers fans are going to be thrilled to see what he looks like purple-and-gold.”

(BTW, both Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss have recently compared Frank Vogel to another goofy sitcom character, Ted Lasso.)

After each of the Lakers' first two days of camp, Vogel has glowingly praised Westbrook's speed, intensity, and fire.

“It's noticeable how different the speed looks a) in front of you in practice, live, and b) on your side,” the Lakers head coach said on Wednesday. “It's really exciting … He's just a blur out there, with his open court speed. Even his half-court downhill speed … His first practice he was basically a paint-to-great factory.”

Vogel uses the “paint-to-great” phrase to describe the ability to create scoring opportunities via dribble penetration. Westbrook is pretty, pretty elite at that particular skill.

James has been impressed, too, by his newest star teammate.

“Nothing that he’s not showing me that I didn’t already know,” James said when asked what Westbrook has displayed. “Just what a fierce competitor he is. Such a great teammate as well, a communicator.”
