The Los Angeles Lakers were purportedly all set to hire former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue… until it all fall apart. According to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Lakers and Lue were not only in disagreement over contract terms, but also with the notion of Jason Kidd possibly serving on Lue's staff as an assistant coach.

It had already been a tumultuous offseason for the Lakers, with Magic Johnson announcing his resignation as president of basketball operations and owner Jeanie Buss reportedly being asked to trade LeBron James:

However, some potentially good news surfaced on Saturday morning, as former Pacers and Magic head coach Frank Vogel looks like he may be the new frontrunner for the Lakers' head coaching job:

Vogel took the Pacers to the playoffs in five of his six seasons in Indiana. Although he struggled to replicate that same success with a young and rebuilding group in Orlando, he probably helped to lay the foundation for the Magic's playoff appearance this season.

Additionally, Vogel could be the kind of defensive-minded coach that the Lakers need. His Pacers teams were almost always near the top of the league in terms of defensive rating and opponents points per game, and Los Angeles was towards the bottom in defensive scoring this season.

Plus, Vogel oversaw the development of young players like Paul George while also managing veterans such as David West and Luis Scola, among others.

Former Lakers head coach Luke Walton seemed to struggle in balancing the need to foster his young players while satisfying his veterans, but Vogel appears well-equipped for that aspect of the job.
